Repair of Natural Gas Pipeline Hit by Third-Party on NW 22nd Avenue Complete

Work continues to restore the worksite, bridge operations and normal traffic flow.

The repair of a 10-inch natural gas pipeline damaged by a third-party construction crew doing work unrelated to Peoples Gas is now complete. Peoples Gas is continuing its work to restore the worksite on and around the draw bridge at NW 22nd Avenue. City of Miami Police Department and Miami-Dade County will facilitate restoration of bridge operations and traffic flow, which may take until Wednesday, April 17.

Peoples Gas’ priority is safety, and the company has been closely coordinated with the U.S. Coast Guard, Miami-Dade County and the City of Miami Police, Fire, Public Works and Emergency Operations Departments to ensure there were no public safety concerns throughout the duration of the week-long repair.

Additional Incident Details:

  • As a result of the impact by third-party construction equipment, a 10-inch steel distribution pipeline was damaged. The pipeline is buried 20-feet deep.

  • To further reduce risk, natural gas pressure on the pipeline was lowered during the repair. Peoples Gas crews monitored system pressures of the pipeline around the clock to continue serving approximately 3,000 customers in the downtown, Coconut Grove and Little Havana areas of Miami. There were minimal customer impacts.

  • The repair includes bypassing the damaged section of pipe, which has been de-energized and removed from service.

  • Peoples Gas will continue its restoration work on the site and coordination with city and county officials.

  • Thank you to the media, Peoples Gas customers, city and county personnel, and the surrounding community for your patience and cooperation.
