Frigid weather isn’t typical for Florida, but it does visit now and then. Remember these tips to stay safe while keeping warm at home.
Heating your home
- Never use your oven or stove to heat the house.
- Never run a generator indoors.
- Lower your thermostat to 68°F or the lowest comfortable setting and keep it there for the greatest efficiency.
- Have a fireplace? Be sure to close the dampers when not in use – but not when the embers are hot! – and always use a screen around an open flame.
- Use a space heater safely. Don’t leave it on all night and always keep it away from drapes, furniture and other flammable materials. And avoid using a space heater in the bathroom, and never touch the heater when you’re wet!
Staying warm
- Before using an electric blanket be sure to inspect it for cracks or breaks in the wiring, plugs or connectors to avoid a fire hazard.
- Keep doors and windows closed during cold weather, and close off rooms you aren’t using to keep home heat where you need it.
- Open shades during the day when the sun is shining to take advantage of the sun’s warmth.
- Keep water from dripping from your roof and freezing on your utility meter.
- Remember your pets and plants get cold, too, so bring them inside especially overnight.
