Let’s work together to keep our system safe

Everyone at Peoples Gas makes safety our No. 1 priority. We work hard every day to ensure our system is operating properly to safely deliver natural gas to your home or business. Did you know that while most of the system is owned and maintained by us, there are a few lines and piping on your property that you are responsible for? We regularly inspect our pipelines, meters and other equipment. If we happen to see an issue with your natural gas pipes and equipment, we’ll let you know, but it’s a good idea to have your gas pipes inspected periodically as well. Sometimes being safe stinks

Did you know the unpleasant odor of rotten eggs is added to natural gas for your safety? It helps you identify if a gas leak is nearby. If you smell it, get to a safe location, call 911 then call us at 877-832-6747. We’re here 24/7 to answer your call about leaks or other natural gas emergencies. If you “dig” lower humidity and cooler temperatures, do it safely

Fall is a good time of year to work in the yard. Remember - all digging projects, no matter how large or small, require a call to 811 – it’s the law. Calling 811 before starting work helps to avoid accidents during digging that could result in loss of service or serious injury. Planning a weekend project? Be sure to call 811 by Wednesday to have utility lines and infrastructure marked for free.

Meter access helps us keep our system safe for you

Our trusted team members and contractors need access to your meter to perform inspections and regular maintenance.

Here’s how you can help:

Trim the vegetation around your meter on a regular basis.
Have pest control experts remove wasp nests around meters.
Ensure safe access. If we have trouble reaching meters or other equipment because of a locked gate, dog or other barrier, we’ll let you know. Then, you can contact us to arrange a convenient time for us to enter your property.
