TECO Encourages Community Service for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Tampa Electric and Peoples Gas support community service and energy-efficiency initiatives

Tampa Electric Company and Peoples Gas Services are proud to join the Florida Public Service Commission, the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) and utilities nationwide to recognize the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday as a national day of service.

Tampa Electric and Peoples Gas offices will be closed Monday, and our employees are encouraged to volunteer.

For more than 120 years, Tampa Electric and Peoples Gas have made a difference in the community. TECO employees volunteer more than 30,000 hours in the community every year. Our employees (and our customers) help neighbors in need by contributing to Tampa Electric Share and Peoples Gas Share, programs co-sponsored by the utilities and the Salvation Army. All contributions go directly to help someone in need, and Tampa Electric and Peoples Gas match donations dollar-for-dollar up to a combined $500,000 a year.

Twelve years ago, NARUC declared the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday as a “Day of Utility Service,” encouraging both public service and energy efficiency. As part of that effort, Tampa Electric and Peoples Gas remind customers to learn about energy efficiency and its financial and environmental benefits. We offer a variety of programs and rebates, including our Neighborhood Weatherization program. This community outreach program offers free energy-saving kits to qualified customers, helping customers manage their electricity costs by making their homes more energy efficient.

Tampa Electric has performed more than 542,600 free energy audits – and paid more than 525,800 rebates to customers– since the company began offering energy-efficiency programs in 1981. Peoples Gas offers cash-back rebates to help customers switch to more energy-efficient appliances.

Tampa Electric, one of Florida’s largest investor-owned electric utilities, serves about 765,000 customers in West Central Florida. Peoples Gas System, Florida’s largest natural gas distribution utility, serves more than 400,000 customers across Florida. They are subsidiaries of Emera Inc., a geographically diverse energy and services company headquartered in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.
