TECO Peoples Gas Celebrates First Commercial Gas Heat Pump Under New Rate

Tampa Housing Authority’s facility will see savings and improved resiliency with this new technology

TAMPA, January 30, 2020

TECO Peoples Gas today celebrated the installation of the first commercial gas heat pump in a customer’s facility, strengthening the company’s position as an innovative energy solutions provider.

The gas heat pump was installed at J.L. Young Apartments, a low-income, senior-housing community operated by the Tampa Housing Authority. It has 450 apartments and a shared recreational/laundry facility that also serves as an emergency shelter for residents.

The Florida Public Service Commission recently approved a special lower rate for gas heat pump (GHP) use in residential and commercial settings. This is the first customer to benefit from the new rate. Customers also may be eligible for a rebate associated with GHPs.

“We are so pleased to partner with the Tampa Housing Authority to bring gas heat pump technology to the J.L. Young complex,” said T.J. Szelistowski, president of Peoples Gas. “The efficiency and resiliency that this natural gas equipment provides makes it a perfect fit for this special facility.”

A gas heat pump is powered primarily by natural gas. GHP systems are resilient, help to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, and operate at low cost. With the GHP, J.L. Young will increase overall energy efficiency and will benefit from the new GHP rate through Peoples Gas.

Peoples Gas System, Florida’s largest natural gas distribution utility, serves about 400,000 customers across Florida. Peoples Gas is a subsidiary of Emera Inc., a geographically diverse energy and services company headquartered in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.
