TECO encourages community service for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Tampa Electric and Peoples Gas support community service and energy efficiency initiatives

TAMPA, January 20, 2014

The companies of TECO Energy are proud to join the Florida Public Service Commission, the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) and utilities nationwide in recognizing the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday as a national day of service in the spirit of Dr. King’s example of dedication to public service.

For more than 115 years, Tampa Electric and Peoples Gas have shared that spirit of making a difference in the community. We support economic development; practice environmental stewardship; prepare for emergency management; and volunteer and participate in social programs. In 2013, team members volunteered more than 17,500 hours in the community.

Team members and customers alike are helping neighbors in need by contributing to Tampa Electric Share and Peoples Gas Share, programs co-sponsored by the utilities and the Salvation Army. Contributions are collected and distributed to customers who need help paying their electric and natural gas bills. All contributions go directly to helping someone in need, and Tampa Electric and Peoples Gas match donations dollar-for-dollar up to a combined $500,000 annually.

Six years ago, NARUC declared the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday as a “Day of Utility Service,” encouraging both public service and energy efficiency. As part that effort, Tampa Electric and Peoples Gas remind customers to learn about energy efficiency and its financial and environmental benefits. We offer a variety of programs and rebates, including our Neighborhood Weatherization program. This community outreach program offers free energy-saving kits to qualified customers, helping customers manage their electricity costs by making their homes more energy efficient. Tampa Electric has performed more than 424,000 free energy audits – and paid more than 430,000 rebates to customers who have participated in the company’s energy-efficiency programs. Peoples Gas offers cash-back rebates to help customers switch to more energy-efficient appliances.

By embracing the spirit of Dr. King, our companies and the communities we serve can work together to make a difference – in our neighborhoods and beyond.

Tampa Electric Company and Peoples Gas are the principal subsidiaries of TECO Energy Inc. (NYSE: TE), an energy-related holding company with regulated utility operations in Florida.
